My Role

Initiator, author and project lead

Scope

Roadmap for at least eight volumes; Volume 1 Energie & Wärme currently 267 pages

Initial Situation

The starting point was my ongoing professional development in project management. I deliberately looked for a real project where I could apply the methods I was learning in practice. This initially led to the book project Wasser & Trinkwassersicherheit.

Work on this first volume naturally led to a second topic: Energie & Wärme. During the development of this volume, the tone, structure and way of presenting information evolved significantly. Illustrations, recurring content elements and clearer reader guidance resulted in the first defined quality standard for the overall project.

Within roughly four weeks — alongside my ongoing professional work — the original application project developed into a multi-volume non-fiction series with its own positioning, defined series standards, product roadmap and launch structure.

The Key Project Decision: A Deliberate Pivot

While working on Energie & Wärme, it became clear that this second manuscript represented the quality and product standard I wanted to pursue long term more effectively. This led to a strategic decision: not to publish the already completed first book simply because a significant amount of work had already been invested in it.

Decision: Energie & Wärme became the new Volume 1. The already completed manuscript Wasser & Trinkwassersicherheit was moved to Volume 2 and deliberately held back for a fundamental revision based on the newly developed series standards.

The book project, which had originally begun as a practical application exercise, thereby became the foundation for a long-term non-fiction series.

From Standalone Product to Product Series

After the pivot, work did not simply continue on the new Volume 1. First, I had to define what would connect the books as a series and which standards should apply to all future volumes.

  1. Standalone product: completed manuscript Wasser & Trinkwassersicherheit
  2. Further development: second manuscript Energie & Wärme with clearer tone, structure and visual communication
  3. Pivot: publication order changed; Energie & Wärme becomes the new Volume 1
  4. Standardization: defined shared positioning, tone, recurring elements and quality criteria for the series
  5. Scaling: developed the original application project into a roadmap for at least eight thematically aligned volumes
  6. Implementation: Volume 1 is being produced and prepared for launch under the new system; Volume 2 will then be revised to the same standard

Developing Series Standards

Standardization is not only about recognition. It prevents key product decisions from having to be made again for every new volume and creates a consistent quality framework.

Positioning and Reader Guidance

  • shared series promise and clearly defined target audience
  • practical preparedness without fear-based communication
  • clear explanations that do not require specialist knowledge
  • Plan B and Plan C thinking instead of rigid one-size-fits-all solutions
  • consideration of different housing situations and budget levels

Recurring Quality Standards

  • clear, concise language with a high level of practical information density
  • recurring fact, warning and budget elements
  • illustrations where they improve understanding or practical confidence
  • action and application elements for concrete next steps
  • source and evidence work combined with structured quality assurance

Product Roadmap

Project Control and Decision Logic

The project is managed through prioritized tasks, dependencies, quality gates and clearly defined approval points. Content, production, website, reader funnel and launch are not treated as separate task lists, but as interdependent workstreams.

  • finalize strategic decisions before downstream production
  • deliberately reassess completed work when new insights emerge
  • define series standards before scaling to further volumes
  • verify physical product quality through a proof copy
  • approve launch only after product, funnel and readiness checks
  • clearly separate planning, actual implementation and measurable market results

For operational project control, I use a structured Asana setup with prioritized tasks, dependencies, QA checkpoints and launch milestones. Strategic decisions are supported by separate market, target audience, positioning, search, pricing, channel and risk analyses.

Making Project Control Visible

The project plan does more than map publication dates. It separates strategic decisions, website and funnel tasks, communication preparation and operational launch steps into prioritized work areas.

Another project phase: website, series hub, landing page, SEO foundation and purchase path are organized as interdependent launch components.

Selected Decision Framework

Strategic decisions on pricing, launch, acquisition costs, product quality and the owned buyer funnel were not based solely on personal judgment. Several structured foundational analyses were created for the project. The risk and sensitivity analysis examines, among other factors, unit margin, CAC thresholds, conversion risks, Amazon dependency and qualitative risks to the product and brand.

Implementation in the New Volume 1

Book mockup of WISSEN, WENN ES ZÄHLT – Energie & Wärme by Yvonne Rummrich

First Product Built to the New Series Standard

Energie & Wärme is the first complete implementation of the newly defined series logic and serves as the reference model for subsequent volumes.

  • 267 pages in 6 × 9 inch print format
  • final manuscript and final KDP print file
  • completed paperback cover
  • illustrations as an integral part of the information design
  • structured action and application elements
  • source/evidence work and index
  • physical proof copy as a dedicated QA milestone

Quality Assurance and Risk Management

A key part of the project is the deliberate separation between digital completion and actual product approval. Although the manuscript, print file and cover are complete, the physical proof copy is treated as a separate quality gate.

The final QA review covers readability, page appearance, spacing, illustrations, information boxes, table of contents, index and technical print quality. Only after this review are necessary corrections implemented and the final publication approved.

In parallel, risks related to positioning, pricing, demand and launch were assessed in separate analyses. The aim is to make critical decisions not solely on personal preference, but on structured assumptions and verifiable criteria.

Website, Reader Funnel and Launch Preparation

The series is not planned as a sequence of isolated standalone products. A dedicated series hub and a Volume 1 page have therefore been created. In addition, buyers are intended to receive digital access to printable action cards via a permanent short URL and a QR code in the book.

The launch also follows a staged logic: first, the product, website, funnel and purchase path are checked technically and editorially. A soft launch is then planned before broader communication and additional marketing activities are activated.

Current Status

Volume 1 is currently between production completion and final approval. The main digital product components are complete, the proof copy has been ordered and the launch infrastructure is being prepared. Volume 2, Wasser & Trinkwassersicherheit, exists as a complete manuscript but will deliberately undergo a fundamental revision based on the new series standard.

Not claimed as results: sales, conversion rates or market success. These metrics can only be evaluated reliably after publication and launch.

Next Milestones

  1. Review proof copy: physical QA for content, layout and production
  2. Approve final corrections: implement only necessary changes in the manuscript and print master
  3. Finalize the reader funnel: integrate short URL, QR code and digital action cards
  4. Review launch readiness: check product page, website, funnel and launch process against the defined criteria
  5. Run the soft launch: verify technical functionality and the real buyer journey in a controlled setting
  6. Revise Volume 2: bring the already completed water manuscript up to the defined series standard
  7. Continue the series: develop further planned volumes using the standardized product and production system

What This Case Study Shows About How I Work

For me, the most important part of this project is not completing a single book, but the ability to take new insights seriously during implementation and use them to build a better overall structure.

The already highly developed water manuscript was not published simply because substantial work had already been invested in it. Instead, new insights from developing Energie & Wärme led to a deliberate reassessment: the order was reprioritized, shared standards were defined, and the original application project developed into a scalable product system.

The project therefore combines creative product development with prioritization, standardization, quality management, dependency management and a staged go-to-market approach.
